Why Do We Sell This Tamping Mat?

We particularly like the 90°-angle at the front of the tamping mat. This supports the grip of the non-slip mat and covers a typical problem area: the front of the table or countertop. With classic tamping mats, the table is only protected from above. However, tamping is always done at the edge. This quickly leads to many dents on the work surface.

What Makes Good Tamping?

"Tamping" refers to pressing the coffee grounds in the portafilter. With pressure of approximately 8-15 kg, the coffee grounds in the portafilter are compressed.

In order to tamp properly at all, the preparation of the ground coffee in the portafilter is crucial. If air bubbles are trapped or if there is more coffee grounds compressed in some areas, the resistance of the coffee cake against water changes.

Good espresso extraction is made possible by uniform resistance. Lower resistance leads to faster water drainage and correspondingly uneven extraction. In the worst case, channeling occurs. In this channel formation, the brewing water drains much faster in some areas and over-extraction takes place.
